Closed parks: Reserves and conservation areas closed due to ex-tropical cyclone Alfred

For safety, some reserves and conservation areas are closed until Monday 30 June due to damage caused by ex-tropical cyclone Alfred. Areas will be opened once inspections, and any necessary works, are completed.

Lake Arragan and Red Cliff campgrounds will be closed from 12 May to Friday 13 June due to road upgrade works.

NPWS is upgrading part of Lake Arragan Road.

Some parts of Bundjalung National Park will be closed on any 1 day during Wednesday 11 June 2025 to Saturday 14 June 2025 whilst road maintenance grading occurs. The closed areas are:

  • Back Beach Road and picnic area 
  • Frazer's Reef Road and picnic area 
  • Iluka Bluff Road, picnic area, walking track and lookout 
  • Ferry Crossing picnic area.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting ongoing aerial and ground baiting programs. Aerial baiting and ground baiting is scheduled from 8th June 2025 to 8th December 2025. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of Wild dogs and Foxes.

Aerial baiting and ground baiting will occur in:

Richmond River Area – Captains Creek NR, Richmond Range NP, Bundjalung NP

Clarence Area - Nymboi-Binderay National Park (NP), Nymboida NP, Mount Neville Nature Reserve (NR), Banyabba NR and State Conservation Area (SCA), Ramornie NP, Bundjalung NP

Coffs Coast Area - Bagul Waajaarr NR, Bindarri NP, Cascade NP, Chaelundi NP and SCA, Cunnawarra NP, Dorrigo NP, Dunggir NP, Gumbaynggirr SCA, Jobs Mountain NR, Mount Hyland NR and SCA, New England NP, Ngambaa NR, Nymboi-Binderay NP, Serpentine NR.

Hastings Macleay Area- The Cells SCA, Cottan-Bimbang NP, Carrai NP and SCA, New England NP, Pee Dee NR, The Castles NR, Werrikimbe NP, Willi Willi NP, Mount Seaview NR.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Pebbly Beach campground is closed from 23 May 2025 until further notice due to ongoing flooding.

Kings Beach in Broken Head Nature Reserve is a culturally significant place for local Aboriginal people and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. For decades, the beach has been a place for social connection, leisure, and at times grief - with the ashes of people lost to AIDS scattered there over the years.

Kings Beach continues to be a place for the LGBTQIA+ community to enjoy, however due to increased visitation and the shared nature of this beloved destination, Kings Beach is not a designated clothing optional area.

All visitors have the right to feel safe and enjoy the beach without harassment and NPWS Officers play an important role in conserving this protected habitat. Please comply with the Broken Head Reserve Plan of Management and respect each other’s right to enjoy the beach in peace and safety.

Safety alerts: Peacock Creek campground access changed

Access to Peacock Creek campground has changed due to deterioration of local roads following the impacts of Cyclone Alfred. See below best options to access the campground whilst repairs and upgrades take place on local roads:

  1. Iron Pot Creek Road via Kyogle (north) - All weather best access is from Kyogle via Afterlee Road to the Dam Access Road, then a left turn onto Brays Road, right turn onto Logan's Bridge Road, right turn onto Iron Pot Creek Road. Follow signs to Bonalbo once on Brays Road.
  2. Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive via Bruxner Highway (south) - best access when open, 2WD suitable in dry weather only. Intermittently closed during periods of wet weather. *re-opening 2 June 2025 following repairs.
  3. Sextonville Road via Summerland Way (east) - suitable for 4WDs only, badly damaged with large pot holes and deep ruts. Repair works soon to commence, check for alerts.
  4. Peacock Creek Road via Clarence way (west) - 4WD only, not recommended for towing. Two steep creek crossings not suitable for 2WD/AWD, narrow weed affected road sections, badly damaged with large pot holes.

Bundjalung National Park visitors may experience loud aircraft noise until further notice. RAAF training operations from the nearby Evans Head Air Weapons Range may be heard and seen from the Black Rocks campground and Jerusalem Creek paddle route and walking track.

  • RAAF schedules for the Air Weapons Range in Bundjalung National Park can change at short notice due to weather or other operational considerations.
