The Green Gully Track

As an experienced bushwalker you'll enjoy rising to the challenges offered by The Green Gully Track in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, near Walcha. Bookings are necessary to secure your experience on this 65km hike through declared wilderness areas and dramatic gorges.
This remote loop walk is for experienced and prepared multi-day walkers only. Your walking group is guaranteed to find space and solitude because the only way to see these inspiring views, dramatic gorges, mountain creeks, and heritage-listed stockmans huts is to make a booking and secure your experience on the track.
At the end of day when your legs are sore and your stamina is tested your walking group will be more than pleased to reach the next hut, instead of having to pitch a tent. Facilities at each hut vary, however they offer all the basics including mattresses, a toilet, and a camp kitchen. And the best part is that you won't need to share the hut with anyone outside your group as it's exclusively yours for the evening.
This truly unique county is part of a declared wilderness area. You'll pass wild rivers, tall open forest and open grassy woodland. Your most constant company might be the birds and animals you chance to come across, from brush-tailed rock-wallabies to spotted-tailed quolls.
With over 170 species of birds in the park, the chances of a magnificant wedge-tailed eagle or peregrine falcon soaring above you are high. At night you might hear the calls of southern boobook or tawny frogmouth owls, a spotted nightjar, or the mournful howl of a dingo.
There’s evidence of thousands of years of occupation by the Thungutti People and neighbouring nations in the Green Gully area. Tools like flakes, choppers and hammer stones have been found. Ceremonial activities represented by scarred trees, and blade production sites have also been discovered across the landscape.
The Thungutti People were decimated by years of conflict, disease and displacement from their traditional lands. By the early 1900s, the isolation of the gorges offered many Aboriginal people an opportunity to maintain connection with the land working as stockmen or domestic help on some of the larger stations in the Macleay Valley. Today this connection continues. While many of the traditional names of this area have been lost, some places still retain their Thungutti name, such as Kunderang, a clan of the Thungutti.
